Coffee: a gogyohka

Good morning all, Frank over a dVerse explored the forms of Tanka, kyoka, and gogyohka. He then challenged us to write a 5 line Japanese style poem. Here is my gogyohka, and the reason I shouldn’t write when I wake up/I should at least finish my morning coffee. Go check out the other fantastic poets of dVerse

A dark mirror quivering
Hot, black and bittersweet
Now I need a wee

Hope you enjoy, please feel free to comment

  1. I like the description of the coffee as a “dark mirror”.

  2. A gogyohka ode to coffee, if I’ve ever seen one! Marvelous!

  3. Your tanka made me smile!

  4. I enjoyed the humor in this and the line “dark mirror quivering”

    • To be honest, quivering probably should have been “shaking with early morning coffee jitters”, but that didn’t fit quite so poetically. Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the comment

  5. Had my coffee, three. And the pee. How funny this is.

  6. You and I are kindred spirits. There is NOTHING before hot coffee in the morning. Well-done!

  7. This is so funny. I was just thinking about the coffee I had before my walk this morning. I had to cut it short.😃

  8. I like the honest humour of this little glimpse into your morning, and the coffee mirror ‘Hot, black and bittersweet’.
